When I finally leave my office, dinner service is finished and the dining room is clean. I drown under the tsunami of emotions that roll over me. Anger at Mr. Black. Frustration and anger and disbelief that Dad hid so much from me for so long. Anger at myself for not seeing just how bad things had gotten for the hotel and, more importantly, for my Dad.

Walking through the lobby, I smile and nod at the staff and guests, though I feel sure they can see that the smile doesn’t reach my eyes. Thankfully, no one says anything.

I move out of the way as a small child runs through the lobby, laughing and leaving a trail of sand behind in his wake. His parents shush him and his father scoops him up into his arms. A pang clenches my heart as I realize that maybe I won’t be witnessing scenes like this any longer. A voice in my head says maybe it’s time for me to have a fresh start, too.

But the idea of leaving the island makes my eyes fill up with tears. This place is my heart and soul.

I can’t imagine a life without the Paradise Grand Hotel.
